Volvo Ocean Race 2017-2018 – La Rotta Definitiva

La Volvo Ocean Race ha annunciato l’aggiunta di una nuova tappa con arrivo a Melbourne per la prossima edizione della regata che parte da Alicante in ottobre. La VOR sarà in Australia per l’ottava, volta ma la prima in più di un decennio.

Melbourne si inserisce tra Cape Town e Hong Kong, sarà la terza tappa, sarà lunga 6.300 miglia e varrà punteggio doppio. La sosta durerà solo un fine settimana e non ci sarà In-Port Race prima che la flotta lasci la città per Hong Kong, quarta tappa. Secondo le proiezioni, la flotta di Volvo Ocean 65 arriverà intorno a giorno di Natale. L’intera rotta ora comprende 10 tappe che toccheranno 12 città in sei continenti.

I team lasceranno Alicante, in Spagna il 22 ottobre e toccheranno Lisbona, Città del Capo, Melbourne e Hong Kong prima di un trasferimento senza punti a Guangzhou in Cina.

Dopo una sosta a Guangzhou, che include una In-Port Series, le tappe oceaniche riprenderanno con una tappa verso Auckland prima di fermarsi a Itajaí, Brasile, Newport, Rhode Island, Cardiff e Göteborg, prima del gran finale nella città olandese di The Hague.

Le due tappe dell’Oceano Meridionale – da Città del Capo a Melbourne e da Auckland a Itajaí – più la tappa del Nord Atlantico verso la fine della gara, da Newport a Cardiff – avranno il doppio dei punti. La tappa più lunga delle complessive 45.000 nautiche saranno 7.600 miglia da Auckland a Itajaí.

Australia in the Volvo Ocean Race:
11 Australian sailors took part in the 2014-15 edition of the race: Will Oxley (Alvimedica), Phil Harmer and Luke Parkinson (Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing), Sophie Ciszek, Stacey Jackson and Liz Wardley (SCA), Andrew Cape (Brunel), and Chris Nicholson, Tom Johnson and Tom Addis (all Team Vestas Wind), Jack Bouttell (Dongfeng Race Team).
The Volvo Ocean Race has visited Australia seven times before: Sydney in 1973-74, 1997-98 and 2001-02, Fremantle in 1989-90, 1993-94 and 1997-98, and Melbourne in 2005-06.
